Winchester Information

Winchester

Since I have been assigned the project to design a house in Winchester, I was initially searching for information of Winchester from many websites and some books. I looked at information that may be used for my design project such as history, topography, weather, architectures, and etc.

Winchester lies in the valley of the Itchen and surrounded by chalk down-land. Once, Winchester was a capital of England in the Saxon period.  There are medieval and Georgian architectures laid out according to the original Saxon street plan where can be seen from the top of St. Giles hill.

The most famous heritage Architectures in Winchester

      1.       Winchester Cathedral: The longest medieval nave in Europe, it has been a place of worship for over 900 years.

      2.       The Great hall and Round table: the survived Aisle hall of 13th century, where contained the King’s Arthur’ Round Table, the greatest symbol of medieval mythology.

      3.       Winchester College: there is believed to be the oldest continuously running school in the century, founded in 1382 by William of Wykeham.

      4.       The Hospital of St Cross:  is a medieval almshouse that has provided sheltered accommodation for older gentlemen since 1136.

      5.       Winchester City Mill: It was a watermill rebuilt in 1744 and began grinding corn again in early 2004 after a major restoration.

      6.       Wolvesley Castle: This palace was a medieval building which was the chief residence of the bishops of Winchester.

      7.       Winchester Museum : the Hampshire’s oldest city museum

      8.        The Westgate: A medieval gateway which located on the top of Winchester high street.
