Japanese packaging design

Japanese packaging design

I like the Japanese culture that how they design the food packaging and the how they wrap the package with folded paper on every takeaway food. They are really good of folding the wrapping paper in many different methods. In my opinion, the lovely graphic on the package can make more value of the product a lot. Sometimes, the package does not come with the ordinary rectangular box shape, it can be in any other different weird shape either.

Illy bar

This is the great idea for recycling the normal shipping container to be the cool coffee shop. The famous brand for coffee, Illy, has turn the normal container to be a small mobile coffee shop kiosk and movable the anywhere.
The design of this coffee shop can serve the sit-in customer around 16-20 people by expanding the both side of façade to have more space. The furniture were fixed to the panels, just open them and will be ready for service.

Japanese Ramen very brief history

Japanese Ramen very brief history

Ramen was not originally from Japan, it was influenced from Chinese noodle and had been developed to be an Own Japanese taste and recipes in early 20th century.

There are mainly 4 types of ramen (defined by stock based)

                1.       Shio Ramen: Salt based soup ramen

                      2.      Tonkotsu Ramen: Pork bone soup ramen

                      3.       Shoyu Ramen: Soy sauce based soup ramen

                 4.       Miso Ramen: Spicy bean paste soup ramen

Moreover, there are a lot more variations of ramen from different parts in Japan.

Why Japanese Noodle bar?

Why Japanese Noodle Bar?

Answer: Because - It's cheap.
                           - It's quick.
                           - It's international well known.
                           - Strongly Asian traditional
                           - It's popular in UK
                           - A good example to study a movable kiosk

An interesting regular noodle bar kiosk in japan, the customers were sitting around the chef.

Some kind of kiosk the customers have to stand and eat.

Sometimes small kiosks need extra tables to expand their space.

They usually have fabric signage to cover the back of customers. Sometimes it's used for protect wind and rain.

Sometimes the customers just pop in to buy some take-away food.

When they close, they just fold the bar up and put everything in to the kiosk and go.

Site Analysis

The Old market square can be accessed from many directions such as from the walking street, road and tram.

The best view is to locate the kiosk facing the council hall.

Tram is the easiest way to reach the site.
It's nice to have a fountain as a background.

In some part of the site condition is slope.

The best location is to locate my kiosk in front of the fountain. Because, in term of marketing, It's far away from many restaurant on both side of the site. Furthermore, this location is slightly in the center of surrounding landmark and easily to be accessed to this point.

Final Presentation

The Goose fair visiting

The goose fair was the the very first case study for the festive environment where I have been to research. This festival was a kind of fun fair and used to be taken place on the old market square long time ago, now it has been moved to the forest recreation ground due the size of this festival larger than the past.
Once I've arrived  at this festival, I felt not so impressed for the space of the fair, it was so massive of people around and lots of food kiosks stuck together in the row along the both sides of walk way. Some kiosks were big ,some were small , but there were not so many choices kind of food in the fair. A number of burger and kebab kiosks were spread everywhere in the event and also the coffee shops were around.

In term of marketing, I was thinking, it would be great if someone open an alternative kind of food business in this festival. The alternative food must be a quick food, well known, variety choices, interesting, good taste, and suite for all ages. Moreover, the kiosk selling the kind of food must be versatile which could be located on any place, any context, movable and could be adjustable to appropriate to the any size of the space.

Gas, water and electrical were usually connected from outside kiosk

Site visiting after project brief hand out

01/10/2013
After we have received the project brief, we went to visit the Kiosk coffee shop in town and have taken some photos around this site. The Kiosk café was an adapted shipping container architecture standing on the concrete structure floor and unmovable. The interior of this Kiosk has been finished with plywood and some part of metal façade has been removed and was replaced with double glazing windows. There were about 20 seats for customers inside the container. Apart from container café, the small kitchen was separated outside the container, it was the part of the main building where located in the same area of the kiosk container. Some details of the kiosk are shown in the photos below.

This side of facade was facing the street.
The main entrance door was facing  the main building and connected to the kitchen.

The interior of the container was using for customers seats only.

The small kitchen but sufficient for there cafe service.

This was details for how they put the container on the floor. Also the detail of using the double glazing to replace the metal sheet facade.

A very warm welcome of interior space, they used the plywood to finished the metal wall of the container.

This was the street where this kiosk located on.
