Glass Flooring

Glass Flooring

Walking on the glass floor, It seems to be fragile and impossible to steps over the glass structure. Nowadays, the technology of building materials have been developed so far, many glass structure has been widely used in many famous architecture from a small house to hi-rise building around the world.

Glass has been used in architecture for a long time. In the past, glass was used for houses to let the day light into the building but can protect the house from wind, rain and snow. Glass was also used for furniture as a table top, cabinet's door, and etc. but with it's fragileness, heavy loading on glass top was seems to be impossible. This problem has been solved from time to time. In this modern world, glass has been used as a building skin, roof top, and floor.

Glass flooring or the glass roof of the floor below, is wildly used in many architecture. This structure would let the daylight pass to inside of building from the top and protect the rain and snow through the building. Moreover, with the strong structure and thickness of glass will be able to support heavy loading over the top such as human weight. This will let the person who standing over the structure can see through the transparent floor to any interesting objects below.

from this picture, this building has glass structure on both floor and roof. The person inside the building is able to see the movement on top and below. This is also letting the natural light pass through building's interior.

with its transparent characteristic will make the building more interesting and stunning.

In many tourist attraction architectures, glass flooring was usually used on very high level floor above the ground to let the tourists feel like they are walking in the air.

For my columbarium design, although it will not be the hi-rise building structure. But as my building site will be located and surrounded by natural environment, I am interested to used this type of structure to be a part of my design to be a connection of nature and my columbarium structure.
